Performances will be from 5/17/25 to 6/1/25 (no performance on Friday, 5/30) at BACCA Arts Center at 149 N. Wellwood Avenue, Lindenhurst.

As Bees In Honey Drown, by Douglas Carter Beane, is black-comedy about a self-invented socialite, con artist Alexa Vere de Vere, and the pitfalls of the unquenchable hunger for fame and stardom in New York City in the 1980’s. The play’s title is a clever take on “humanity grasping for air under the weight of its own culture” and asks the question – “fame and fortune at what price?” Playwright Beane won the 1998 Outer Critics Circle Award for this darkly delicious satire.

This production requires an ensemble cast of 6 performers to portray 22 characters. All roles are open.

Actress 1 – (age: mid 20’s to mid-30’s)

Alexa Vere de Vere – Antagonist of the play, a self-invented socialite/con artist living in New York City (she is a unique blend of the following and must impersonate Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Rosalind Russell in Auntie Mame and Tallulah Bankhead in Lifeboat). Speaks with an affected Transatlantic accent.

Amber - Photographer’s assistant

Secretary to Morris Kaden, a record executive

Bethany Vance – an actress and victim of Alexa’s

Ginny Cameron – a violinist who almost gets catch in Alexa’s web

A Muse – representation of Alexa

Actress 3 – (age: early 20’s to early 30’s)

A British back-up singer

Carla – an “old friend” of Alexa’s (in cahoots with Alexa)

Newsstand Woman - witnesses a street altercation

Denise – an up-and-coming actress

Illya Mannon – a dancer and victim of Alexa’s

A Muse – representation of Alex

Actor 1 – (age: mid-20’s to mid-30’s)

Evan Wyler – Protagonist in the play, handsome, gay, a Jewish author who gets tangled up in Alexa’s web and ultimately seeks revenge

Actor 2 – (age: late-20’s to late-30’s)

Photographer - takes photos of the “almost rich and famous”

Swen – Swedish model and victim of Alexa’s

Hotel Clerk - works the front desk at the Royalton

Morris Kaden – an executive at Delta Records scammed by Alexa

Actor 3 – (age: mid-20’s to mid-30’s)

Ronald – salesclerk at Saks Fifth Avenue (in cahoots with Alexa)

Skunk – a British rock singer and victim of Alexa’s

Mike Stabinsky – Alexa’s old friend from before she became a con artist, gay, a painter, enters into a relationship with Evan
